Selby G. Benton
October 30, 1921 - August 26, 2010 (Age 88)
He was born in Cornelia, GA, son of the late Willa Mae and Selby M. Benton. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1943 where he attended Officer Candidate’s School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he proudly served as a lieutenant in the European Theatre of World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a son of Georgia, a son of the South and a true American patriot.
Lt. Selby G. Benton was wounded in action Sept. 22, 1944 near the German border, southeast of Metz. He fought in
the hedge-rows of France and was in the heavy fight1ng around St. Lo In July 1944.
He was with General Patton's Third army in the break-through. After receiving a serious wound in the left
arm and shoulder, he was flown back to England where he was hospitalized for two and a half months and was returned to Stark General Hospital at Charleston, Dec. 13, 1944.
Lt. Benton wears the Purple Heart medal, European Theater of Operations ribbon with 4 battle stars and has been recommended for the Bronze Star.
