John Lane†
John Lane, grandson of Revolutionary War soldier Garland Lane, served in the Confederate Army. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company D of the 43rd Regiment, GA Volunteer Infantry at time of death. This unit was also known as the Middle River Volunteers. John Lane was killed by friendly fire while on water detail. His unit had recently moved camp in Tennessee, and he left to find water. It is thought that he became lost, and upon return, entered at a different check point. He was shot twice by a sentry. His pocket watch took the brunt of the first shot. The second shot was fatal.
