Roy Lee Ellenburg

February 19, 1914 - September 10, 1995 (Age 81)

Roy Lee Ellenburg was born in Rabun County, GA on February 19, 1914, and was the son of George Washington Ellenburg and Rachel Malinda Watkins Ellenburg.
Roy’s military records show that he enlisted on December 2, 1942, and was recalled on December 29, 1942, at Fort McPherson, Georgia. He and his new bride, Mary Ann Thompson Ellenburg, moved to Killeen, Texas so he could go through Basic Training at Camp Hood. His Army Specialty was listed as “Gunner” and his Military Qualifications were listed as “Marksman,” showing he was issued a “Rifle ’03.” Roy was injured at Camp Hood and was honorably discharged on October 28, 1943. His character was listed as “Excellent.”
Roy, Mary, and their new daughter, returned to Rabun County, Georgia and moved to Batesville, in Habersham County, Georgia, a few years later. The couple raised 4 children in the area between Batesville and Clarkesville. Roy Lee Ellenburg died in Habersham County on September 10, 1995. He and Mary are buried at Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest, Habersham County.
